MPEI delegation visiting Cuba

From February 4 until 10, 2020, the delegation of MPEI visited Cuba to participate in the 5th Cuban-Russian Rectors’ Forum. The delegation was headed by Nikolay Rogalev and included Alexander Tarasov, Vice-Rector on international relations, and Galina Kurdyukova, Vice-Rector on Economy.

In the framework of the visit, the meeting with Jorge Armando Sepero, CEO of Power Industry Union of Cuba, Union Electrica (UNE), and Heads of UNE basic departments was held. The questions of cooperation between UNE and MPEI in specialist training for Cuban power industry and mutual work for realization of the Roadmap for development of power industrial sector of Cuba were discussed.

UNE was founded in 1960 and is currently one of the leading electricity companies in Cuba, serving over 95% of its population.

The delegation of MPEI visited the company that is specializing in technical maintenance of electric power plants, EMCE. Its CEO Jesus Valdes Piloto showed his MPEI colleagues the features of the main enterprise, including the retraining center. During the meeting, the demands of the Cuban Power Engineering branch for specialists training and retraining were being discussed. This event was timed to the Russian-Cuban project of building 4 blocks of 200 MW and modernization of 10 blocks of 100 MW.

Afterwards, the meeting that gathered more than 70 MPEI Alumni was held. The first Cuban students were admitted to MPEI in 1965. Since then more than 400 Cuban students, Ph.D.-s and interns have been studying at MPEI.

The meeting with the Minister for Power Industry and Mining of Cuba Livan Arronte Cruz took place, embracing talk with CEO for Energy of the Ministry Tatiana Amarian Bogachova who once passed the education at MPEI in Electrical Engineering. The Minister confirmed the interest towards training and retraining of Cuban specialists at MPEI. MPEI Rector, in his turn, underlined the necessity of the realization of full potential of MPEI graduates in Cuba for their successful training.

February 6, the delegation of MPEI visited the Technological University of Havana, and is worth mentioning that the Electric Power Engineering Faculty of the University is headed by the MPEI graduate Miguel Castro Fernandez.

Then the meeting of Nikolay Rogalev with the Rector of Technological University of Havana took place for the new agreement for collaboration to be signed. The Cuban Rector underlined the deep interest in training and raising the qualification of specialists in science and education at MPEI.

On February 7, the MPEI delegation took part in the Fifth Cuban-Russian Forum of Rectors. The forum was attended by supervisors from over 40 universities in Russia and Cuba. The forum was opened by the Minister of Higher Education of Cuba, Dr. Jose Ramon Saborido Loidi and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Cuba Andrei Anatolyevich Guskov. Russian and Cuban Rectors both expressed keenness in deepening the cooperation.

Rector of MPEI was involved in the discussion on “Interuniversity cooperation in the field of training, research, technological development of innovations. Science and technology parks. University-company communications”. Nikolay Rogalev pointed out the main problems in Cuban Power Industry and capabilities of MPEI that could prove themselves useful as their solutions. In the framework of the forum the bilateral meetings were held and the agreements for cooperation with the University Guantanamo and University of Matanzas.

The delegation of MPEI participated in the meeting with the Rector of University of Havana. In course of the talks the prospects of development between our Universities were touched.
