The 2nd meeting of BRICS Working Group on New and Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency

On October 14-15, the second meeting of BRICS working group on new and renewable energy sources and energy efficiency was held under Russia's chairmanship. In the context of a pandemic, the meeting was held in the format of a video conference.

Deputy Director of the Department of State Scientific and Technical Policy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Andrey Romanov and Rector of the National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) Nikolay Rogalev gave a welcoming speech on behalf of the Russian Federation.

The meeting was chaired by the head of Russian BRICS working group Tatyana Shestopalova, director of the Institute of Hydropower and Renewable Energy, MPEI. The moderator of the meeting was Evgeniy Ignatyev, a member of Russian working group and an employee of the Department of Hydropower and Renewable Energy.

More than 40 representatives of all BRICS participating countries took part in the work:

  • Russia – 12
  • Brazil – 5
  • China – 15
  • South Africa – 6
  • India – 5

The meeting attended by leaders and leading experts in energy from BRICS countries included six thematic sessions. The attendees discussed topical energy efficiency development issues and the prospects for the transition to renewable energy sources.

Representatives of all participating countries made presentations on the topic "Development of New and Renewable Energy Sources in their Countries".

Mikhail Tyagunov, professor at MPEI, made a presentation on developing renewable energy in Russia.

The meeting attendees devoted further discussion to the prospects for developing renewable energy (including distributed) and the problems of design, construction, and operation of power facilities and systems based on renewable energy sources.

Within the framework of BRICS working group meeting, specific projects were discussed, such as developing new cooling systems for high power LEDs to increase reliability and service life and the use of platinum as an important element in an integrated process of efficient energy conversion.

As a result, the meeting participants adopted a regulation on the Working Group's New and Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency activities. This document regulates the goals, objectives, functions, and procedures for organizing the Working Group activities and outlines the priority topics for the next BRICS STI 2021 competition.

BRICS (BRICS) is an international union of the Federal Republic of Brazil, the Russian Federation, the Republic of India, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa. BRICS was established in 2006 at the initiative of the Russian Federation. BRICS Chairman in 2020 - Russia, in 2021 - India.

BRICS Working Group is one of the formats of interaction within BRICS for cooperation in various fields.

The main objectives of the Working Group on New and Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency are to promote the formation of energy-saving interstate policies of BRICS countries through coordinated actions in the field of economic, scientific and technical cooperation, the development and implementation of joint projects on the use of advanced technologies in the field of energy conservation and the development of renewable energy sources.
