Ceremony of Gifting Gömböc to MPEI

17.12.2020

15 December, 2020, Konkoly Norbert, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary in Russia, Anita Hegyi, Head of the Hungarian Cultural Centre and Sandor Kozlov, Attache on Culture and Sport of the Embassy visited MPEI. The delegation was met by Alexander Tarasov, Vice-rector on International Relations of MPEI, Sergey Shirinskii, Head of International Administration, and representatives of the Department of International Relations.

In the framework of the visit, an individual model of gömböc was gifted to MPEI. This model has a special serial number - G1930 and is a special present for the 90th anniversary of MPEI. A gömböc is a body that is mono-monostatic, i.e. has only two points of equilibrium, one unstable as a sphere and one that is stable like a tilting doll. The gömböc was first conjectured by Russian mathematician Vladimir Arnold in 1995 and realized in 2006 by Hungarian scientists Gabor Domokes and Péter Várkonyi.

The reception was attended remotely by Nikolay Rogalev, Rector of MPEI, Andrey Kondrat, Rector’s Assistant and of the gömböc creators Gabor Domokes. The sides congratulated each other and expressed the will to extend the collaboration in the future.

MPEI has become the owner of the second gömböc in Russia. The first one is set in the Steklov Institute of Russian Academy of Science.
