Nobel Laureate Rae Kwon Chung was awarded the title of “MPEI Honorary Doctor”

On October 11, 2023, in the academic colloquium of experts of the “Global Energy” association, a solemn ceremony was held to award the title “MPEI Honorary Doctor” to Rae Kwon Chung, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, citizen of the Republic of Korea.

Rae kwon Chung is the Chairman of the International Committee for the Global Energy award, Counsellor to the Chairman of the Group of Leaders and High-level Experts on Water and Natural Disasters under the UN Secretary General, as well as a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

“It is a great honor for me to accept the title “MPEI Honorary Doctor”. I will readily make all necessary efforts to strengthen our cooperation and with great pleasure I will continue cooperation with MPEI already in a new status”, Rae Kwon Chung commented.

Rae Kwon Chung promotes the concept of low-carbon “green growth” as a new paradigm that implies economic development of countries and creation of new jobs dealing with climate change. The concept provides for the distribution of publicly available technologies, including through obligatory licensing and transfer of state-owned technologies.

In 2007, IPCC Rae Kwon Chung was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the group’s efforts to accumulate and spread knowledge about anthropogenic climate change and develop measures necessary to counter such a change.

“In 2020, the Department of Innovative Technologies of Knowledge – Intensive Industries of the MPEI made a proposal to award Rae Kwon Chung the title of “MPEI Honorary Doctor” for his great contribution to science, the development of renewable energy and energy saving technologies, which was supported by the Academic Council  of the MPEI”, - Andrey Rogalev, Head of the Department of Innovative Technologies of Knowledge – Intensive Industries of the MPEI said.

Rae Kwon Chung has made repeated visits to MPEI. He periodically gives lectures on the future of “green” energy, environmental protection and other trending topics.
