The first Vietnamese students entered MPEI in 1953. MPEI is proud that in 1954 it was honored to receive President Ho Chi Minh, who paid an unofficial visit to MPEI. Over the years, MPEI has prepared for Vietnam over 600 bachelors, masters and specialists, 120 candidates of science and 10 doctors of science. More than 160 Vietnamese specialists completed internships at National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute". The work of MPEI was highly appreciated by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - MPEI was awarded the Vietnamese Order of Friendship in 1978 and the Order of Labor of the first degree in 2015.

In 2018, MPEI officially celebrated the 65th anniversary of the start of the Vietnamese students training, holding a variety of events, including meetings with the Vietnamese graduates.

In the 2018/19 academic year, 73 Vietnamese students were studying at MPEI on basic educational programs and at the preparatory department, as well as 7 graduate students.

In addition, 4 Vietnamese citizens work at National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" holding the teaching positions.

In 2015, a group of professors headed by rector of National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" was awarded the Order of Friendship for a significant contribution to the training of energy personnel for Vietnam, for strengthening and developing traditional friendship and a comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

From 2004 to 2015, at the request of the Vietnamese Electric Networks Company (EVN), MPEI conducted targeted training for Vietnamese bachelor and master degrees in the specialties necessary for the development of the nuclear power industry in Vietnam.

Since 2013, National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" together with NUST "MISIS" under the control of Rossotrudnichestvo has been conducting numerous activities in Vietnam within the framework of the international project "It’s time to study in Russia!". National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" actively cooperates with the Ministry of Education and Training, leading universities, scientific organizations and energy companies of Vietnam (9 cooperation agreements).

The Minister of Education and Training of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Fung Xuan Nha, is a MPEI Honorary Doctor. On September 7, 2018, Minister Fung Suan Nya arrived at National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" with an official visit. Five employees of National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" were highly appreciated by the Ministry of Education and Training of Personnel of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and were presented to the Honorary title "Honored Educational Worker of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam".

Together with the international institute of the Vietnamese State University (Hanoi), a joint educational program (a double-degree program) in English in the field of "Computer Science and Computer Engineering" is being implemented.

Since 2015, a group of Russian scientists from various universities and research institutes headed by Professor Nguyen Quoc Shi (Head of the Laboratory of Plasma Physics, Department of General Physics and Nuclear Fusion, National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute") has been participating in the work of an international scientific team to find ways to protect the Michon Temple Complex carrying out research under the patronage of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam and the governor of Quang Nam province.

In 2016, an agreement on cooperation in education was signed between the secondary general education school named after Hoang Van Thu, Hoabin Province, and National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute", under which the project of summer schools for Vietnamese students is being implemented. In 2019, it is planned to hold the third summer school.

National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" together with organizations of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is developing a project to create a Russian-Vietnamese Energy Center for strategic partnership. This initiative was supported by the Russian Embassy in Vietnam.

National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" cooperates with the following universities and organizations of Vietnam: Vietnam State University, Hanoi; International Institute-Vietnam State University, Hanoi; Vietnamese Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM); Hanoi Polytechnic Institute; Electric Power University (EPU); Vietnamese State Technical University named after Le Kui Don; Hon Duc University; University of Science and Technology - University of Danang; University of Thingen, University of Tuyla, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology.

Among the well-known graduates of MPEI are rector of Ho Chi Minh University of Technology Ho Dak Lok, WINATOM President Chan Chi Thanh and others.
