The eighth Open Academic Competition in MPEI on Russian for foreign students

MPEI International Division informs that according to the work plan with foreign students on March 20 in the MPEI Big Assembly Hall there had been organized annual Russian Language Competition for foreign students.

The Academic Competition was held already for the eighth time and it was open as it had been for five years. Except students of our university, representatives of ten Moscow universities also took part in the Academic Competition: 254 foreign students and Ph.D.- students competed in two nominations: recitation and singing the songs in Russian. Among participants there were representatives of different age categories and different extents of possession of Russian which were divided into three categories: students of Preliminary Course; students of 1-2 courses, graduate students and Ph.D.- students of the 1st year of training; students of older years and graduate students and Ph.D.- students of the 3rd year of training.

On festively decorated scene there had been acted representatives of Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Turkey, Angola, Mozambique, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Iran, Oman, Iraq, Yemen, Jordan, Mongolia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Kenya, Peru, India, Algeria, Nigeria, Benin, Zambia, Chad, Botswana, Venezuela, Mexico and Turkmenistan. Competition proceeded 7(!) hours and ended with singing of the Hymn of world democratic youth. People heard performance of popular Soviet and Russian songs and poems of the Russian poets.

Competition caused interest not only of foreign students and their professors making the majority of audience, but also of Russian students. The competent jury consisting of 15 professors of participating universities rendered the verdict and chose winners. Winners in the categories became Nguyen Van Hiet (Vietnamese Ph.D.- student who is training at Preliminary Course), student Banda Kelvin Vincent from Zambia and Ph.D.- student of the second year of training Arkar Myo from Myanmar. For excellent (almost opera) performance of the song "Russia — My Homeland" a student Luu Minh Duc from Vietnam won the prize "For Mastery". The jury prize "For originality of composition" was won by students Odubiyi Michael Adams (Nigeria) and Kieu Thi Khanh Linh (Vietnam) who read fragments from Pushkin's poem. Student Monteiro Rajhid Dinis Miguel from Angola wrote himself in Russian the splendid poem "Cruel Love". He won the special prize "For Poetic Talent".

On April 5 in MPEI Recreation Center there took place festive evening concert finishing annual Interfestival of MPEI. On this evening gold, silver and bronze medals, and also memorable gifts to prize-winners were handed over. Each participant received the special diploma "For Active Participation".
