All-Russian scientific-practical conference with international participation “Teaching a foreign language for professional purposes: traditions, innovations and prospects” is held at the department. During the conference, the participants discuss a wide range of topical issues of teaching a foreign language for professional purposes.

The staff of the department has developed a number of open mass electronic educational courses to accompany the educational process in conditions of distance learning.

The purpose of training in a foreign language for specialists of non-linguistic profiles is to master the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for their further professional activities. The main emphasis in teaching a foreign language is laid on:

• use of foreign-language information sources of a technical area for solving various practical problems;

• the use of a foreign language as a means of interpersonal communication in a professional communicative environment;

• development of skills for understanding a specialized foreign language text.

To achieve the stated goal, various traditional and innovative methods of teaching a foreign language are used. In addition to communicative methods, “ETALON” language groups launched a pilot project on the use of subject-integrated language teaching. This approach provides high motivation in mastering a foreign language as a means of intercultural professional communication.

• Electronic course on the optional discipline “German Language (Second Foreign Language)”.

• All-Russian essay competition in a foreign language “Distance learning of a foreign language: a look from the other side of the screen” (2021). Participants: Polina Bukina, Daria Klimkina, Dmitry Kukis. Diploma for the 3rd place – Polina Bukina.

• V Interuniversity competition of modern literature and journalism translations (2021). • International essay competition in Russian, English and German “My future professional activity” (2021). Diploma for the 1st place –Polina Bukina.

All classrooms of the department are equipped with multimedia electronic boards, which allows conducting classes using electronic educational environments and multimedia tools.​

The Department of Foreign Languages trains bachelor’s, specialist’s, master’s and PhD students in the discipline “Foreign language” of all technical and economic areas of training at MPEI.)
