Summary

 

The history of the department of foreign languages ​​began simultaneously with the history of the university. Throughout its activities, the department has been providing training for students of all levels of preparation (bachelor’s, master’s, PhD) in the discipline “Foreign language” (English, German, French).

The teaching staff of the department conducts scientific and practical activities both in the field of linguistics and pedagogy, and in matters of methodological support of the educational process in a foreign language teaching at MPEI.

Head of the department Marina A. Slepneva was awarded the Diploma of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation for significant achievements in the field of education and many years of conscientious work.

Associate Professor of the Department N.A. Kopylova was awarded the Diploma of the President of the Russian Federation Putin V.V. for her contribution to the preparation and holding of the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students in 2017 in Sochi. She is also the winner of the “Golden Names of Higher School” competition organized by the League of Higher School Teachers (2018).

  • features and difficulties of scientific and technical translation;
  • translation of patent literature;

Recent projects

All-Russian scientific-practical conference with international participation “Teaching a foreign language for professional purposes: traditions, innovations and prospects” is held at the department. During the conference, the participants discuss a wide range of topical issues of teaching a foreign language for professional purposes.

The staff of the department has developed a number of open mass electronic educational courses to accompany the educational process in conditions of distance learning.

Features

The purpose of training in a foreign language for specialists of non-linguistic profiles is to master the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for their further professional activities. The main emphasis in teaching a foreign language is laid on:

  • use of foreign-language information sources of a technical area for solving various practical problems;

  • the use of a foreign language as a means of interpersonal communication in a professional communicative environment;

  • development of skills for understanding a specialized foreign language text.

To achieve the stated goal, various traditional and innovative methods of teaching a foreign language are used. In addition to communicative methods, “ETALON” language groups launched a pilot project on the use of subject-integrated language teaching. This approach provides high motivation in mastering a foreign language as a means of intercultural professional communication.

The staff of the department has developed a number of open mass electronic educational courses for teaching a foreign language:

  • English for Researches. Technical translation course for PhD students of technical universities.
  • Modular electronic course on the discipline “Foreign Language” to support the educational process in the InEI groups of part-time and part-time education.
  • Electronic course on the optional discipline “German Language (Second Foreign Language)”.

All classrooms of the department are equipped with multimedia electronic boards, which allows conducting classes using electronic educational environments and multimedia tools.​
