MPEI participated in the strategic session on legislative support of economic cooperation with African countries in the State Duma

On July 25, 2024, the Expert Council on the development of partnership with African countries under Alexander Babakov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, held a round table “Strategic session on legislative support for economic cooperation with African countries in the field of energy”. The event was moderated by Nikolay Novichkov, Deputy Chairman of the Expert Council, coordinator of the State Duma deputy group on relations with the Parliament of South Africa and parliaments of other countries, co-moderated by Andrey Gromov, Director of the GR-Group consulting agency, member of the Board of the African-Russian Energy Association. The event gathered deputies of the State Duma, representatives of the Ministries of Energy, Industry and Trade, SC Rosatom, large energy companies and holdings such as Power Machines, New Energy Group, New Energy Group and others. MPEI was represented by Yuriy Sharov, Head of the Electric Power Systems Department, and Nathalia Savchenkova, Assistant to Vice-Rector on International Relations.

The purpose of the discussion was to develop proposals to stimulate the development of economic relations between Russian companies and African countries in the power engineering sector.

The speeches of the Deputy Chairmen of the State Duma Alexander Babakov, Boris Chernyshov and Sholban Kara-ool raised the issues of financial cooperation with African countries, particularly in the power engineering sector, the importance of cooperation in science, education and personnel training, the introduction of modern Russian technologies in African countries, certification and standardization of power engineering equipment. Their proposals were supported by other speakers.

Yuriy Sharov as the Chairman of the Russian-Moroccan Business Council, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to cooperation with African states, which have rich but not sufficiently explored resources and are now in the stage of deep transformation of all business spheres, which would allow the introduction of the best Russian practices in the power engineering sector, for example, trigeneration and desalination plants, also using renewable energy sources.

At the end of the strategic session, a resolution was proposed with practical steps to stimulate the development of relations with African partners.
