Cuban President underlines important role of MPEI in realization of Republic Energy Program

Between 4 and 12 February, 2022, MPEI delegation was attending the 13th International Congress of Superior Education “University 2022” in Cuba, that included the annual Rector Session “Russia-Cuba” in its framework.

MPEI was presented by MPEI Rector Nikolay Rogalev and its Vice-rector on international relations Alexander Tarasov.

During the visit, the delegation of Russian Universities met Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel. He gave a positive mark on the vast impact of MPEI in the preparation of highly-qualified personnel for the Republic and real work of our university in the framework of Cuban Energy program realization.

MPEI delegation was received by Comandante Ramiro Valdes, Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba, who is also in charge of energy issues. The meeting was attended by Cuban Minister of Energy and Mining Resources Livan Arronte Cruz, Director General of the Energy Union of Cuba UNE Jorge Armando Sepero, Assistant to the Deputy Prime Minister Vivian Miranda Itchman (MPEI graduate), Deputy Minister Tatyana Amaran Bogacheva (trained at Electric engineering faculty, MPEI), as well as other representatives of the energy sector. During the meeting the basic directions of development of the Cuban energy program were discussed. It was pointed out that in the forthcoming year 24 leading specialists of the Cuban power industry are being sent to MPEI. Comandante Ramiro Valdes expressed his opinion on the need for a deeper MPEI participation in the personnel training for the country's energy sector. In particular, he proposed to consider the issue of establishing  MPEI branch in Cuba.

Afterwards, MPEI delegation was welcomed by the Cuban Minister of Higher Education Jose Ramon Saborido. The Minister pointed out positive dynamics of high-quality personnel preparation at MPEI. Gustavo Cobreiro, Counselor of the Cuban Embassy in Russia, underlined the positive experience of MPEI in preparing doctorate students.

As well, the working meeting was held at the Department of Transfer and Distribution of the Energy Union. The delegates were received by its Head Eleazar Moreno Ricardo. He spoke on the most important issues of the power complex development and his interest in attracting MPEI to their decision. The MPEI delegates had got acquainted with the directors of various departments that are to be sent to MPEI in the next year.

As well, in the course of the visit, the delegation was given an appointment with Modesto Gomez Crespo, Technological University of Havana Rector. The Cuban Rector expressed his deep concern for MPEI assistance in training and retraining of the personnel. A preliminary agreement on sending five members of UH teaching staff to MPEI for Ph.D. studies. The Academic Council of UH decided to award the Medal of this university to MPEI Rector Nikolay Rogalev who merited it by the high impact of MPEI in the personnel training for the Cuban power branch. The MPEI Rector stated his gratitude and confidence in a productive cooperation, taking into account the fact that more than 60% of UH teaching staff had their formation in our country.

At the forum of rectors, Nikolay Rogalev made a presentation on the topic: "Contribution of MPEI to the implementation of the energy program of Cuba".

Within the framework of the forum, agreements were signed with the University of Jesus Montane Oropesa (Universidad “Jesus Montane Oropesa”), the University of Cienfuegos (Universidad de Cienfuegos “Carlos Rafael Rodriguez”), the University of MOA (Universidad de MOA).

A meeting was held with the First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Cuba and the Representative of Rossotrudnichestvo Irina Chetiy.

The visit to Cuba can be considered as successful, taking into account the agreements made and the high esteem of the Russian delegation.
