​​The cooperation between MPEI and Hungary began in 1957, when the first students were accepted for training. National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" has trained a large number of highly qualified personnel for a number of countries around the world, including 305 graduates from Hungary.

MPEI cooperates with universities and organizations of Hungary for many decades. It is planned to continue and expand cooperation on exchange programs in the field of research activities.

In recent years, National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" actively cooperates with the Hungarian Cultural Center in Moscow. In 2015, in the framework of this cooperation and the Days of Hungarian Culture in Russia, National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" took part in organization of the Festival of Inventions and Tourism "Hungary +".

Every year the Tempus Community Foundation announces the opening of a new contest for Russian students for a Hungarian scholarship program Stipendium Hungaricum. This scholarship provides the opportunity to undergo training on undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs in Hungary in Hungarian or English. It also provides the possibility of internships.

Since 2010 the All-Russian MPEI Open Speedсubing Championship under the auspices of the World Cube Association (WCA) takes place every year at the end of November at MPEI.

Honorary Doctors of MPEI from Hungary: Frieds Chucky (Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Hungary), Otto Benedikt (Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Hungary), Andras Levai (Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Hungary, Professor of Technical University of Budapest), Laszlo Kapoyi (Chairman of the Board of JSC System Consulting).

In 2020, Konkoly Norbert, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary in Russia visited MPEI. In the framework of the visit, an individual model of gömböc was gifted to MPEI.
A gömböc is a body that has only one point of stable equilibrium. The model has a special serial number - G1930 and is a special present for the 90th anniversary of MPEI. MPEI became the owner of the second gömböc in Russia, the first one is set at the Steklov Institute of Russian Academy of Science.
