Cooperation between MPEI and Zambia began in 1969, when the first students were enrolled to MPEI. Presently, MPEI 25 undergraduate and graduate students have finished their study at MPEI.

Since 2017, MPEI has begun to develop cooperation with universities in Zambia. The rector of the Copperbelt University notes that part of the academic personnel at his university has been educated at MPEI.

From 2013 to 2015 in Namibia with the support of the Russian Embassy in Namibia and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Zambia there were a number of activities in the framework of the Olympiad "Time to study in Russia!".

MPEI regularly participates in exhibitions "Days of Russian Education" in the Republic of Zambia, working with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) in Zambia and the Ministry of Education of Zambia.

At one of the events in the RCSC in Zambia (Russian House), Lusaka, MPEI shared its experience at the round table Russia-Zambia on "Development of sustainable STEM ecosystem" and took part in activities to improve the efficiency of recruitment of Zambian students to study in Russian universities. Also, MPEI participated in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the RCSC opening in Zambia.

MPEI professors often visited Zambia to give lectures and participate in conferences. In 2020 Robert Kampesha, Military Advisor of the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia, visited MPEI to discuss the issues of cooperation under the agreement with ZESCO.

20 August, 2021 MPEI joined the Russian-African Network University (RAFU).
