Department of Nuclear Power Plants

1956

Summary

The Department of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) of the National Research Institute "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" was established in 1956 and is the oldest Atomic Energy Department in Europe. Professor Theresa Margulova was the first head of the department, where she organized the training of specialists and engineers in the field of nuclear energy, which was a new industry at that time. From the moment of department foundation till the present time, the main task of the department has been to train highly qualified specialists for the enterprises of the nuclear industry. A major contribution to the establishment and development of the department was made by outstanding scientists and specialists from both industry and research institutes, among them the members of USSR Academy of Sciences: Viktor Sidorenko, Georgiy Kruzhilin, professors Nikolay Sinev, A. Kochenov, V. Gerasimov, V. Titov, G. Bat, L. Voronin

Research areas

  • Assessment and resource management of structural materials and equipment of nuclear power plants;
  • Studying the transfer and distribution of impurities in the steam generating equipment of nuclear power plants;
  • Analysis of nuclear power plants’ accidents;
  • Thermohydraulics of nuclear power plants;
  • Simulation and calculation of nuclear power plants’ schemes;
  • Simulating of the interaction of vibrations of nuclear fuel and equipment of NPPs with working fluid pulsations.

Recent projects

  •   Thermal detonation propagation and its impact on obstacles in non-homogeneous and stratified medium;
  • Investigation of condensation induced water hammers in horizontal channels with different structures of a two-phase medium;
  • Dynamic and energetic characteristics assessment of molten lead with water droplets explosive interaction.

Features

The list of disciplines taught at the Department of Nuclear Power Plants is addressed to training specialists who have knowledge of all the basic technologies of nuclear power plants. The department of NPPs made a significant contribution in training the personnel for the nuclear industry.

The department’s activities have ensured the knowledge continuity, by improving the training quality and working out the flaws of personnel. And for that, the department received the support of leading experts in the nuclear industry, and contributed to the inclusion of the National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" in the Association of "Consortium of Supporting Universities of the State Atomic Energy Corporation "Rosatom".

In recent years, experimental and theoretical work has been carried out at the department of NPPs under contracts with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, and other organizations of the Russian nuclear industry, such as the State Corporation Rosatom, Design branch of Rosenergoatom, Smolensk NPP, Nuclear Safety Institute of The Russian Academy of Sciences.

Scientific work of students, carried out under the guidance of the department supervisors, is annually submitted to student’s scientific competitions and their authors become the laureates. A number of student research supervisors have been awarded the Rosenergoatom prizes for their success in training personnel. Students and Ph.D. students of the department annually take part in the International Scientific and Technical Conference of undergraduate and postgraduate students "Radioelectronics, Electrical Engineering and Energy", the Kurchatov Youth Scientific School and many other Russian and international scientific conferences. Lecturers of the department collaborate with leading foreign scientific and educational centers for the training of specialists in the field of nuclear energy such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), the University of Pisa (Italy).

Unique equipment

At different times, the department created educational laboratories in its the main specialized disciplines: a neutron physics laboratory, an uranium-water subcritical test facility; a class of analytical simulators and thermohydraulic codes, laboratory of physical and chemical processes in the equipment of nuclear power plants, and a laboratory for the thermohydraulic of nuclear power plants.

Uranium-Water Subcritical Test Facility

Class of analytical simulators and thermal hydraulic codes

In 2011, the test facility was built at the department to study the hydrodynamics of the coolant in the downcomer of the VVER reactor. The test facility has been equipped with an automatic system of scientific research and a special measuring system that allows recording the spatial distribution of thermophysical parameters. The results of experimental studies performed at the test facility are used to validate three-dimensional computational software (CFD-codes).

Downcomer Test Facility

In 2011 the laboratory of Modern Design Technologies for NPPs was established at the department, funded by Rosenergoatom. The laboratory has modern computer technology and SmartPlant technological design software products from InterGraph Corporation, "software solutions for design, construction, commissioning and smooth operation of complex industrial and energy facilities such as nuclear power plants".
