Development of collaboration with Mongolia

During the period of time from the 12th to the 17th of March, 2019, Vice-rector on International Relations Alexander Tarasov was visiting Mongolia. His main mission was the participation in the "Russian Education Expo - 2019" and to holding of the negotiations with the Administration of Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Cooperation between MPEI and Mongolia has its own long story. The first Mongolian student graduated from MPEI in 1959. Since then MPEI has educated more than 300 engineers, bachelors, masters and Ph.D.’s, more than 150 Mongolian specialists have been staging at MPEI. A large number of Mongolian students entered MPEI after the organization of the MPEI Educational Centre at Ulan-Bator University in 1999, sometimes exceeding 150 students studying at MUST on bilateral MPEI program.

In 2004 MPEI was awarded the Certificate of Merit for the great contribution to training of high-qualified national specialists. Same year, MPEI united the efforts of the leading Russian universities and, with the support of Moscow Centre for international cooperation, RCSC and the Embassy of Russia in Mongolia, carried out the First Mongolian Olympiad in Natural Sciences.

Next years the Olympiads have become regular and overall comprised more than 20000 Mongolian schoolchildren. In April 2013 MPEI became the Head of the organization, preparation and conduction committee for the cycle of Olympiads for Mongolian students. The Olympiads were held in the framework of the "Time to study in Russia!" project under the aegis of Rossotrudnichestvo. More than 30 Russian Universities from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Volgograd, Yakutsk, Ufa, Michurinsk, Kyzyl were involved in the events.

Professors and staff of MPEI actively participate in collaboration with different Mongolian enterprises in the domains of power engineering, science and education. Five MPEI employees have been awarded honorable certificates of "Leading Power Engineer of Mongolia" and "Leading Educator of Mongolia".

Outstanding impulse was given to development of collaboration between MPEI and Mongolian institutes by awarding the Order of Polar Star of Mongolia.

In 2018 MPEI and MUST signed a Memorandum of opening the Russian-Mongolian Centre of Digital Technologies in Power Engineering.

Currently, 44 Mongolians study at MPEI. Among them there are 7 Ph.D. students. MPEI was represented on the unified stand of Russian Universities Exposition "Time to study in Russia!". The special MPEI leaflets and materials were handed out. The total number of Russian Universities presented at the Exposition was 36, the total number of visitors exceeded 2000.

In the framework of the visit the meeting with the Rector of MUST, Honorable professor of MPEI, Baatar Ochirbat, occurred, and the issues of joint educative and scientific activities were discussed. Special attention was paid to the realization of project of Russian-Mongolian Technical Universities Consortium, which foundation was planned in 2018. Upon the end of the meeting MUST Rector Baatar Ochirbat invited MPEI Rector Nikolay Rogalev to the celebration of the 65th anniversary of MUST foundation that will be held in October 2019.

MPEI Vice-rector Alexander Tarasov met the Director of Power Engineering Institute of MUST Chimed Mangaljalav, MUST Rector Advisor Lhamsuren Gurbazar, MUST Power Engineering Department Chairman Bayar Bat-Erdene, MUST Scientific Secretary G. Bekhbat. The participation of the MUST Power Engineering Institute students in the MPEI International Programs was discussed during the meeting.

The discussion with professor of the MUST Power Engineering Institute, Honorable professor of MPEI, Sodovyn Batkhuyag, was held, where the issues of perfection of interaction with MPEI Alumni in Mongolia were touched.

MPEI graduates are well-employed in the State branches, i.e. Ministries, TPS Administration, Boards of the large enterprises; they successfully work in power engineering companies, industry, IT and education. In 2019 MPEI celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first graduation of Mongolian students from MPEI and 20th – of the foundation of the MPEI Educational centre in Ulan-Bator.
