MPEI cooperation with universities in the USA began in 1991, when cooperation agreements were signed with Hawking College (Ohio), the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Institute of Technology named after Rose-Hulman.

Since 2001, Barry Dooley, Executive Secretary of the International Association for the Properties of Water Vapor in the USA, has become MPEI Honorary Doctor.  Barry Dooley is one of the major experts in the field of thermal power engineering. In March 2014 he gave a lecture for MPEI students on the topic "Issues of water and steam use at thermal power plants: history and prospects" (in English).

In December 2008, the Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) was opened as part of the cooperation between the MPEI and Microsoft. MIC's work is aimed at improving the skills of the teaching staff; training highly qualified specialists with modern information technologies, additional training for students and postgraduates, as well as training in the implementation of software development projects on the Microsoft platform.

Many foreign companies are interested in MPEI scientific developments. In February 2013, the reception of the President of PHLburg Technologies Inc (USA) was held at the MPEI. The main activity of the company is the search for unique technologies with new technical properties, followed by commercial exploitation, ensuring the protection of intellectual property.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of the USA (IEEE) is one of the organizers of the annual International Scientific and Technical Conference of Students and postgraduates "Radioelectronics, Electrical Engineering and Power Engineering", held at the MPEI.

Since 2018, MPEI has been holding the IEEE International Youth Scientific and Technical Conference "Relay Protection and Automation".

1. The University of Wisconsin-Madison (1991, cooperation agreement) is a public research university located in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The University was founded in 1848 and is a founding member of the Association of American Universities.

The University consists of 20 schools, which, as of autumn 2009, had 28,690 undergraduate students and 9,116 graduate and doctoral students. There are 2017 teachers on staff.

The University offers 135 bachelor's degree programs, 151 Master's degree programs and 107 doctoral degree programs.

2. University of Colorado at Denver (1997, cooperation agreement) is a private research university in Denver, Colorado, USA. It was founded in 1864 by former Colorado Governor John Evans. It is the oldest private university in the Rocky Mountain region. The university has more than 11,000 students. The teaching staff consists of 1,259 people.

3. University of Science and Technology in Missouri is a US university located in Columbia, Missouri. Founded in 1839, it became the first public university on the west bank of the Mississippi River. The University of Missouri is the largest in its state, with 30 thousand students from all US states and more than 100 countries studying in 270 specialties. There are more than 270,000 university graduates in the world, half of whom live in Missouri.
