MPEI celebrated the 77th anniversary of Myanmar's independence

On February 18, 2025 MPEI delegation took part in the solemn events on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of Myanmar's independence.

Sultan Makoev, Director on International Education, Marina Osipova, Deputy Director on International Relations, Vasilina Masyagina, Assistant to the Vice-Rector on International Relations, and Irina Sazonova, Leading Specialist of the International Relations Directorate, attended the meeting from our university.

In his welcoming speech, Mr. U Lwin Oo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the Russian Federation, emphasized the special role of our country in the history of bilateral relations: “Russia, then part of the Soviet Union, was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Myanmar after its independence in 1948. It is important to note that today also marks the 77th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our countries. Myanmar has always valued Russia's steadfast and highly significant support on the international stage.”

Later in the program, Myanmar students studying in Russia and representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar introduced the guests to their country's traditions and culture. The performance by Mye Min Tant, a trainee at MPEI from Myanmar, received a warm round of applause.

Burma's independence from the United Kingdom was proclaimed on January 4, 1948. In 1989, the country's government officially changed its name from Burma to Myanmar.
