MPEI strengthens cooperation with Cuba05.04.2025From April 2 to 4, 2025, the Republic of Cuba hosted a series of events organized within the Intergovernmental Russian-Cuban Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation. The 22nd meeting of the Commission was chaired by Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. During the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the support provided to Cuba, including an emergency response program aimed at mitigating the impact of the energy crisis that struck the island at the end of last year. He also emphasized that education is a key component of bilateral cooperation. In this regard, MPEI Center for Targeted Training was established in November 2024 to prepare specialists in power engineering and electronics. As part of the Commission’s events, MPEI participated in the meeting of the Energy Working Group held on April 2, with the involvement of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation. On behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Mines of the Republic of Cuba, the working group was led by Deputy Minister Tatiana Amarán-Bogachova. MPEI was represented by Anastasia Mashkova, Director on Integration Policy Development, and Marina Karaber, Deputy Director. The meeting was held in a friendly and constructive atmosphere. Discussions on key areas of interstate cooperation in the fields of power engineering and industry led to effective solutions for addressing current challenges. The parties expressed their mutual intention to annually increase the number of government-funded quotas for the education of Cuban citizens in Russia, including for teaching staff. They also emphasized the importance of developing roadmaps for the modernization and advancement of the energy sector, conducting long-term workforce planning (over 5, 10, and 15 years), and performing calculations to assess operating modes, energy losses, power supply quality and reliability, as well as devising solutions for the optimal management of energy networks. At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening and implementing initiatives for the development of the power engineering sector. Following the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening and implementing the Targeted Training Center project. They also discussed ways to enhance scientific cooperation, promote innovation, establish a system of continuous workforce development and professional training for specialists from Cuban energy companies, as well as the activities of the established Working Groups under the Center’s framework for the coming year. These efforts will take into account the ongoing development of cooperation within the Center, based on a comprehensive analysis of the current state and future prospects of the power engineering sector in the Republic of Cuba.
