Students participated in a summer school in Lanzhou for the first time

07.08.2026

July 1-22, 2026, students from the Economics in Power Engineering and Industry Department (EPEI) at the Engineering-Economic Institute (EEI), National Research University “MPEI”, took part in an international summer school organized by Lanzhou University of Technology (LUT, China). The program, titled “CSC Frontier Technologies for New Energy Power Equipment & Systems Course Schedule”, focused on modern technologies for developing new power equipment and systems.

The MPEI delegation included 15 third‑year students majoring in Economics (38.03.01). The training followed an intensive format and was conducted in English over three weeks. Daria Nikiforova, Senior Lecturer at the department, served as the group’s coordinator.

As part of the academic component, participants attended a series of lectures delivered by leading experts from LUT. Sessions covered the fundamental principles of multiphase flows, their impact on hydraulic machinery, examined the mechanisms of thermal runaway in lithium‑ion batteries and strategies for thermal management, as well as explored reliability issues for hydraulic valves and modern approaches to pump design.

The program placed strong emphasis on hands‑on learning. Students visited research laboratories and key industrial enterprises in the region. Tours of Lanzhou LS Group Co., Ltd. and Lanzhou Water Pump Factory gave participants insight into the full production cycle for industrial equipment, modern mechanical processing technologies and quality control systems. A key part of the program was team‑based project work: students carried out a technical analysis of pump designs, created 3D models, as well as presented their final projects in English.

Beyond the academic curriculum, students had the chance to explore China’s culture and history. They took practical classes in basic Chinese, attended workshops on traditional wushu and China’s intangible cultural heritage, and visited the university’s history museum and library. They also saw landmarks in Lanzhou, including the scenic Yellow River (Huanghe) waterfront. Organized trips to Xi’an and Tianshui allowed the students to view the world‑famous Terracotta Army and other unique historical sites.

Upon completion of the program, MPEI students gave it high marks. They highlighted the significant expansion of their knowledge about modern equipment manufacturing and operation technologies and stressed the value of the experience in cross‑cultural communication and working in international engineering teams. The skills they gained will help them better understand technological processes which is essential for economic analysis of industrial enterprises and for advancing international cooperation.

Lanzhou University of Technology (LUT) is one of China’s key technical universities, tracing its history back to 1919. The university comprises 19 schools (faculties) and hosts more than 27,500 students from 35 countries.

Cooperation between MPEI and Lanzhou University of Technology takes place within academic mobility programs and the SCO University network. The 2026 summer school marked the first joint educational initiative of this kind, giving MPEI students the opportunity to study cutting‑edge Chinese developments in hydraulic machinery and power equipment and to exchange experience with international peers.
