MPEI strengthens cooperation with North Korea04.02.2025On January 31, 2025 MPEI welcomed the delegation of Kim Chaek Polytechnic University (DPRK) headed by the Rector, member of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Deputy of the Supreme People's Assembly, Park Zi Min. The delegation also included Kim Yong Chol, Dean of the Faculty of Marine and Ocean Engineering; Shin Yong Il, Dean of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering; Lee Yong Chang, Dean of the Faculty of Nuclear Science and Technology; Park Hae Il, Director of the Petroleum Research Institute of the Faculty of Earth Science and Technology; Om Il Ren, Director of the Engine Research Institute of the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Technology; Zwe Gen Suh, DPRK Foreign Ministry official; Han Seong Dok, Director of the Department of International Affairs; Han Seong Dok, Lecturer of the Department of Education; and Lee Yong Chang, Director of the Institute of Petroleum Research of the Faculty of Earth Science and Technology. On MPEI side, Sergey Shirinsky, Head of External Relations Department, and Elena Gulicheva, Director on International Relations, participated in the meeting. The guests were given a tour of the university's key facilities, including the GOELRO Museum, the modern "MPEI-Hainan University" space, and leading departments. The delegation visited the Departments of Hydromechanics and Hydraulic Machines, the Hydropower Engineering and Renewable Energy and the Energy Structures and Hydro-Technical Installations Department of the Hydropower and Renewable Energy Institute (IHRE). The delegation also visited the National Technology Initiative Center for Electricity Transportation Technologies and Distributed Intelligent Energy Systems of the Electrical Power Engineering Institute (IEPE), as well as the Innovative Technologies for High-Tech Industries of the Energy Efficiency and Hydrogen Technologies Institute (IEEHT). At the Nuclear Power Plants Department (NPP) the delegation visited the uranium-water subcritical stand. The guests were pleased to note that they were familiar with the training manual “Nuclear Power Plants” written by Prof. Theresa Margulova, the founder of the department. As a token of friendship, Prof. Marina Khvostova, Head of the NPP Department of the Thermal and Nuclear Power Engineering Institute (ITNPE) presented the delegation with a copy of the training manual. At the Power Machinery and Mechanics Institute (IPMM) guests visited the departments of Metal Technology and Steam and Gas Turbines. They look over a unique laboratory of turbomachinery gas dynamics with its modern equipment. In the course of the negotiations, the parties discussed promising areas of cooperation in the educational and scientific spheres, presented MPEI opportunities to train students and Ph.D.-students, as well as to conduct joint research. MPEI Rector expressed readiness for further development of partnership relations. In conclusion, both parties signed a record of a meeting, fixing the key agreements between the universities.
