MPEI discussed prospects for Russian-Iranian cooperation

On August 31, 2026, MPEI welcomed a delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran led by Mr. Vahedi Abolfazil, Deputy Minister for Educational Affairs at the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Iranian delegation also included Mr. Ghasemi Ali Abadi Mehdi, Adviser to the Minister of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Danesh Doost Mehdi, Adviser for Technological Cooperation at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Roostaei Davoud, Science Adviser at the Embassy; Mr. Rezael Majid, Attaché at the Embassy, as well as Mr. Mohammadmostafa, Interpreter.

MPEI was represented by Nikolay Rogalev, Rector, Alexander Tarasov, Vice-Rector on International Relations, Sergey Shirinsky, Head of the External Relations Department, Elena Gulicheva, Director on International Relations, as well as Maria Osipova, Deputy Director on International Relations.

The visit began with a presentation of MPEI’s research and development projects in electric transport. Alexey Anuchin, Head of the Automated Electric Drive Department, presented the university’s priority projects currently underway.

The guests then toured the university campus. The delegation visited the Automated Electric Drive Department at the Electrical Engineering and Electrification Institute, the System Electric-MPEI Training Center, the ABB-MPEI Joint Training and Consulting Center, and the Engineering Center for Next-Generation Large-Scale Power Engineering at the Industrial Electronics Department of the Radio Engineering and Electronics Institute. The guests learned about the university’s infrastructure and latest developments. The tour also included several landmarks of the Main Building, including the MPEI-Hainan University space and the GOELRO Museum.

During the meeting, the participants discussed promising areas for cooperation between MPEI and scientific and educational institutions in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Particular attention focused on joint research programs, including postgraduate education and Ph.D. training. The participants also discussed cooperation between university faculty members and researchers, the exchange of expertise, and the development of joint educational initiatives and projects in various fields of science and technology.

MPEI representatives highlighted the opportunities for university cooperation through the BRICS Network University and the SCO University. A large number of Iranian universities joined the BRICS Network University last year, creating new opportunities for direct institutional contacts and joint educational and research initiatives. MPEI also continues to develop cooperation with international partners through the SCO University.

Mr. Vahedi expressed the Iranian side’s strong interest in developing a partnership with MPEI:

“We know the rich history and experience of MPEI. We also know universities in Iran that would be happy to cooperate with you. We hope to identify promising areas for joint work and develop effective cooperation that will enhance the standing of our universities. We look forward to expanding cooperation in various fields and implementing joint projects and research programs. With your support, I hope we can begin this work for the benefit of our countries”.

Following the meeting, both sides expressed their mutual interest in further developing cooperation, as well as agreed to continue discussions on joint educational, scientific and research initiatives.
